Sisters out of Focus: Military Nurses in the Photographic Record of the Second World War
Abstract
Visuals illustrate history in a way that words often cannot. And yet, even with digitized images available online in sophisticated databases, there are still too many hidden figures in Canadian history—military nurses being one of many examples. A project to index the official photographic record of the Second World War held at Library and Archives Canada to identify servicewomen has been ongoing since 2018. A close examination of the official photographic record of the Second World War allows researchers to further their understanding and appreciation of the distinctiveness of Nursing Sisters’ service.
