Abstract

This paper outlines the main features of emigration in the Saguenay between 1852 and 1861. This detailed analysis is based on original methods already presented in Histoire sociale — Social History, XIII (mai-May 1980): 173-93. The population, between 1838 and 1861, was characterized by rapid growth, imbalance between the sexes and a high proportion of young people. Half the population was mobile. Of those couples who moved, about half remained within the Saguenay, the other half left the region. No one variable among those of age, family size, occupation and household structure governed the inclination to migrate or the destination chosen.
