La Société canadienne d'économie sociale de Montréal (1888-1911): ses membres, ses critiques et sa survie

Abstract

Fondée en 1888 par l'historien français Rameau de Saint-Père et les Québécois Louis-Amable Jetté et Léon-Adolphe Chauvin, la Société canadienne d'économie sociale de Montréal souhaitait vulgariser la pensée de l'Ecole de Le Play et contribuer à l'œuvre monographique entreprise par le maître et ses disciples. Si elle s'est acquittée raisonnablement bien de la première tâche, elle n'a jamais réussi à devenir une véritable société savante. L'explication se trouve dans sa composition socioprofessionnelle, la relative pauvreté et les habitudes de vie de la bourgeoisie canadienne-française, et le sous-développement du système d'enseignement universitaire. Founded in 1888 by French historian Rameau de Saint-Père and Quebecers Louis-Amable Jetté and Léon-Adolphe Chauvin, the Montreal-based Canadian Society on Social Economy sought to popularize the thought of the Le Play School and to contribute to the written works of the master and his students. Although it was moderately successful in the first of its goals, it did not succeed in becoming a true intellectual society. These results are explained by reviewing the organization's socio-professional composition, the relative poverty and lifestyle of the French Canadian bourgeoisie, and the underdevelopment of the educational system at the university level.
