Abstract

This article begins with an appraisal of the major trends in sexuality examined by historiography, and reviews the theoretical and methodological problem inherent in such an approach. It then proceeds to a more specific examination of the continuity-discontinuity problem, in reference to the works of Michel Foucault. These various elements lead to a discussion of the peculiar approach to the history of sexuality compared to historical investigation in general.
